OpenMedia signs joint letter regarding upcoming Copyright Reform Package

Today OpenMedia joins 22 other organisations to express our concerns about the European Union (EU) Commission’s upcoming copyright reform package.

As we’ve written elsewhere, leaks of the draft law show unprecedented new powers for large publishers that will stifle online innovation and dissemination of news and information in the European Union. The draft confirms that the Commission is still pushing forward with their controversial #LinkTax plan, and new censorship powers for online platforms.

This comes on the heels of a disastrous ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) significantly harmed our right to link, and advocates around the world are hoping the EU Commission takes this opportunity to make things better, rather than worse.

There’s no doubt that the leaked EU copyright directive is worse than feared. And with the official proposal just around the corner, Internet users may soon face some of the worst copyright rules in the entire world.
