OpenMedia is a community of people who think critically about technology, shape how the Internet is governed, and bring others along in that work. Whether you want to help analyze and shape Canadian policy, host events in your community, or simply join the conversation, there's a place for you here.

Fellowships and Internships

Summer Fellowship

OpenMedia's Summer Fellowship is a three-month immersive program running from June to August that empowers next-gen policy changemakers in Canada who are ready to tackle the most pressing digital policy issues, and to build a more democratic digital future. Fellows get hands-on opportunities to engage OpenMedia's community of over 230,000 members, along with personalized mentorship and support to launch policy initiatives on issues they care about.

Applications for the next cohort will open in early 2027. Sign up for our newsletter to get notified when the next round of applications open.

You can also learn more about the 2026 program to get a sense of what we offer.

Past and current cohorts:

Internships

Interested in working with OpenMedia but the Fellowship isn't the right fit? We welcome internship inquiries from students and emerging advocates who want to contribute to the fight for a free and open Internet. Reach out to us at [email protected] and pitch us your ideas.

Volunteer Opportunities

Governance Board

OpenMedia is looking for new board members on an ongoing basis who are passionate about the open Internet. The OpenMedia board is a governing board responsible for helping the organization reach the primary goals of citizen engagement and empowerment. Once elected, Board members serve a two-year term. If this sounds like you, learn more and apply here.

Advisory Board

OpenMedia is seeking academics, activists and long-time OpenMedia community members to help us think about the future and possibilities of our Internet. The OpenMedia advisory board is a non-governing meeting group that will meet regularly to talk about the future we're fighting for and how we can get there. Sound like something you want to be a part of? Learn more and apply here.

Community Exhibition: The Glass Room Misinformation Edition

OpenMedia partners with The Glass Room, a travelling exhibition that makes the hidden workings of the Internet visible and accessible to everyday people. We’re bringing the exhibition to our BC community in July, August, September and October 2026. There will be a series of panel discussions in tandem with the exhibit.

We're looking for collaborators who can host the exhibition in their community, as well as volunteers to help it run. Write to [email protected] to learn more about the Glass Room and how to get involved.

Media Riff-Raff: Live Community Conversation Series

Media Riff-Raff is a space for our community to riff on ideas, question assumptions, and think radically about how to make our digital lives better. This is a live conversation series for unfinished thoughts, genuine curiosity, and collective sense-making. No polished expertise required.

We invite Community members interested in tech, media, digital rights, and public policy, as well as advocates, organizers, students, professionals, academics, and any curious thinkers who values dialogue and collaborative learning over having all the answers.

Sign up for our newsletter and get notified for the upcoming sessions.

We have we chatted about so far:
