We’re so grateful to these Internet heroes for stepping up to help!

We couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who supports our work!

In order to gear up and make sure we’re armed for the tough battles over the year ahead, every December we hold a crucial end-of-year fundraising drive. This past December we set out to achieve three goals:

1. To secure the one-time contributions needed to hit the ground running in January;

2. To welcome new monthly allies that will keep us going day by day and enable us to plan the sustained, long-term campaigns we’re known for — the ones that often lead to our biggest wins;

3. And to encourage leaders from the web and tech sector to match every single donation from our grassroots community.

If you supported us, I want to thank you from the bottom of every one of my team members’ hearts. Because of you we were able to meet the goals we set out to achieve in December - and we couldn’t be more grateful!

Your support is what makes it possible for OpenMedia to stand up against huge businesses and government hierarchies with a superabundance of cash and resources at their disposal. It can feel intimidating at times, but our community of supporters always supercharges OpenMedia onward and upward - whether it’s tackling big telecom conglomerates’ attempts to control the web, Internet Censorship at the hands of legacy media giants, or unaccountable mass surveillance.

There are some awesome web service providers and incredible organizations that stepped up in a great big way by offering matching funds to those who joined us during our donor drive. These leaders recognize the importance of our work to safeguarding online free expression and our digital rights - and they put their money where their mouth is. I want to take a moment to recognize them now:

Independent Internet Service & Mobile Providers

Distributel, Vmedia, Ice Wireless, Sugar Mobile and Start.ca are leading, independent Canadian providers that are standing up for an open Internet. At OpenMedia we’ve long fought for a more decentralized telecom market with more choice and affordability for customers. These providers definitely represent the kind of providers we’d like to see more of.

VPN Service Providers

If you’re looking to keep your internet browsing secure, a VPN is a big piece of the puzzle.

VPN technology is about safeguarding our privacy and civil liberties so we are happy that in addition to providing access to that technology our friends Private Internet Accessand TunnelBear step up to support our work.

Hootsuite

Social media dashboard and analytics provider Hootsuite is one of Canada’s hottest web companies right now. As major users of their service we’re thrilled that they give back to support OpenMedia.  Their social media dashboard has definitely helped make our work more efficient and effective, and ensure we can better keep in touch with all our community’s input and feedback.

Internet Society's North American Chapter

The Internet Society (ISOC) is a trusted independent source of leadership for Internet policy, technology standards, and future development. More than simply advancing technology, ISOC works to ensure the Internet continues to grow and evolve as a platform for innovation, economic development, and social progress for people around the world. ISOC and OpenMedia are definitely on the same page, so we were thrilled when the North American Chapter stepped up to support the work we are doing.

Human Data Commons Foundation (HDC)

The Human Data Commons Foundation was formed to address the increasing ethical problems caused by the scaling collection of personal data. Contemporary technology enables the development of massive databases which can be utilized for research and analysis, but at present, these are mainly built without transparency or accountability.

We’re so glad HDC is working on proactive solutions to protect our privacy and went even further by helping OpenMedia fight for your digital rights.

OpenMedia is proud to be a leader when it comes to grassroots donations and diversity of supporters. Being a crowdfunded organization is a big part of who we are, and — whether you’re a business, an organization, or a grassroots donor — our work just wouldn’t be possible without all of you.

Thank you to everyone who is backing OpenMedia.  If you’ve been following our busy start to the year you know there’s no shortage of work to do!
