Why asking for social media information for US visas is a danger to free expression world-wide

Asking for social media information as part of a visa application will always have repercussions for free expression world-wide.

THE SITUATION:

The U.S. government wants to implement an “extreme vetting” measure forcing millions to turn over all their social media handles going back 5 years as part of their visa application.

IT IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE:

  • Sets a dangerous anti-privacy precedent.
  • Frightens people away from expressing critical views of the U.S online.
  • Sets a chilling effect on Free Expression globally.
