Frequently Asked Questions

Is OpenMedia a charity? Is my donation tax-deductible?

OpenMedia is a registered nonprofit organization headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. Under Canadian law, charities are restricted to spending 10% or less of their budget on political advocacy. OpenMedia is effective because so much of our work involves forcefully advocating for policy change. We just couldn’t do the work we do as a charity under the current rules. Your donation is a very powerful contribution to the possibilities of the open Internet, but unfortunately it’s not tax-deductible in Canada.

What does OpenMedia do with community donations?

Last year (2014), over 58% of OpenMedia contributions came from individual grassroots donors, 29% from businesses and another 13% in philanthropic contributions and grants. Our monthly donors, giving an average of $10 a month, form the backbone of our support and keep us campaigning for long-term wins.

In 2014, 70% of our budget went to campaigns capacity— this means the people and resources we need to run high-impact campaigns, websites, and action tools for users. Another 20% went to operation and administrative costs like rent, legal advice, and the other 10% to fundraising costs.

Are you affiliated with any political party?

Nope! We’re strictly non-partisan. We support ideas that line up with our goals, no matter who they’re from. In Canada, we’ve supported (and strongly opposed) ideas and policies from every major party. Note: non-partisan does not mean we avoid politicians— we often talk to political leaders and their staff to let them know what our community thinks. This communication helps turn your crowdsourced policies into reality.

Do your emails use tracking links?

Our email software uses basic, industry-standard analytics to let us know what’s working when we communicate with you. For example, we can see aggregate numbers for an email to answer questions like, did people opening the message actually click a link to an action? Did people open the email at all? We use these results to inform future communications and make sure we’re talking about what matters to our community. Read our privacy policy to see how we take your privacy very seriously.

Do you ever work with other advocacy groups?

OpenMedia collaborates with other groups when our collective voices will have a bigger impact. There are many great organizations around the world doing great work for the open Internet, and from time to time we’ll partner with them to have an on-the-ground impact (for example, to deliver petition signatures to local decision-makers) or to share important information.

If we’re partnering with another group that might keep you informed about a campaign via email, we’ll make sure to let you know right on the action page.

I'm an existing monthly donor. How do I update my payment information?

We're working on an online process, but in the meantime there are a few ways to update your donation infomation:

  • Give us a call at 1-844-891-5136 (toll-free, 9am - 5pm PT) and ask for Mazdak or Andrew.
  • You can also email us with a current phone number and we'll be happy to call at your convenience. OpenMedia does not recommend emailing sensitive credit card information (except for updated card expiration dates).
  • Create a monthly gift with your updated payment information on our donations page and send us a notification email with your donation details.

How the heck can I do more to help?
