Rogers Announces Purchase of Compton Communications

Another day, another step towards increased media conglomeration in the Canadian telecommunications and Internet access market: according to Cartt.ca, on late Tuesday evening, Rogers announced its purchase -- for an undisclosed amount -- of the independent cable company Compton Communications.

The Utica, Ontario-based and family-owned Compton Communications has been around since the 1960s and now serves about 5,500 cable subscribers in Southern Ontario. Though small in size, Compton has been well-known as a leader in Canadian cable services throughout its fifty-year tenure. The purchase will expand Rogers cable footprint in Ontario.

In an interview with Cartt, owner and operator, Ron Compton cites competitive pressure and as one of the reasons for the buy-out: “You want to sell when you’re doing well, not when you start to get inundated by your competition...We’re just too small."
