All the gratitude from your OpenMedia team

We couldn't be more thankful to everyone who helps support our work.

At OpenMedia we’re very proud that the majority of our funding comes from thousands of donations by everyday people.  Not only does this support help ensure our independence, it also crucially signals that we’ve earned the trust of a critical mass of Internet users.

I can’t tell you how much your support means to your small team at OpenMedia. We often find ourselves taking on huge business and government hierarchies with unmatched resources at their disposal. To be honest it can be overwhelming at times, but our community of supporters emboldens us to keep moving forward - whether it’s tackling big telecom conglomerates’ attempts to control the web, Internet Censorship at the hands of legacy media giants, or unaccountable mass surveillance.

Considering the importance of grassroots support to our work, every December we hold our crucial monthly donors drive. Monthly donors keep us going day by day and enable us to plan the sustained, long-term campaigns we’re known for -- the ones that often lead to the biggest wins. We simply would not be able to have made significant changes to the TPP and keep up the fight without our monthly donors.

If you have signed up as a monthly donor I want to take a moment from the bottom of my heart to thank you for contributing and for believing in us.

This year we were also lucky to have several web service providers step up and offer matching funds to those who joined us during our donor drive.  These providers recognize the importance of our work to safeguard free expression online and they put their money where their mouth is. I want to take a moment to recognize them now:

Gossamer Threads (GT.net): Gossamer Threads is a Vancouver-based hosting provider. They host OpenMedia’s websites and campaigns! Let me tell you, OpenMedia gets some very serious spikes in traffic with little notice. Gossamer Threads has been a wonderful host, helping us affordably ensure our web assets load quickly and consistently under very dynamic conditions. We’re so grateful for their support during our donor drive.

UnoTelly: UnoTelly is a leading VPN service provider based in Toronto Canada.  VPN technology is about safeguarding our privacy and civil liberties so we’re happy that in addition to providing access to that technology, UnoTelly is also stepping up to support our work.  VPNs are very much in the sights of outdated media conglomerates who see anonymous Internet use as a threat, so I’m sure our collaboration is only just beginning.  If you’re looking to keep your internet browsing secure, a VPN is a big piece of the puzzle.

Hootsuite: Social media dashboard and analytics provider Hootsuite is one of Canada’s hottest web companies right now. As major users of their service we’re thrilled that they decided to give back this year.  If you’re a social media power user, you should give their dashboard a try. It’s definitely helped make our work more efficient and effective.

Affinity Bridge: Open source web development agency Affinity Bridge has been collaborating with OpenMedia since the start – their office is just one floor above ours!  Affinity Bridge helped to build many of our campaign websites and tools, and they are the main developers behind our social enterprise NewMode.  It’s great to have a group that works so closely with us step up to support our work.

VMedia: VMedia is a leading independent ISP and IPTV provider. At OpenMedia we’ve long fought for a more decentralized telecom market with more choice and affordability for customers. VMedia definitely represents the kind of provider we’d like to see more of.

Tucows: Tucows is many things, including a domain name registrar and provider of the popular independent cell phone service in the United States called Ting. Tucows has been fighting for an open Internet for many, many years, and we’re thrilled to have their support for our matching funds drive.

OpenMedia is proud to be a leader when it comes to grassroots donations and diversity of supporters. Being a crowdfunded organization is a big part of who we are, and it wouldn’t be possible without all of you.

Thank you to everyone who is backing OpenMedia.  If you’ve been following our busy start to the year you know there’s no shortage of work to do!

Onward!
