An Internet slow lane sneak attack

In February 2015, after a massive, year-long process, the U.S. Federal Communication Commission voted to protect Net Neutrality by introducing strong open Internet rules, rules Americans of all political stripes supported.  But now Big Telecom’s bought-and-paid-for lackeys in Congress have buried dangerous loopholes into a bill that could destroy the government’s historic ban on Internet slow lanes.

But now Big Telecom’s bought-and-paid-for lackeys in Congress have buried dangerous loopholes into a bill that could destroy the government’s historic ban on Internet slow lanes.

What’s worse: this bill has nothing to do with the open Internet. It is the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill – Republican's budget proposal that could prohibit the FCC from implementing these net neutrality rules.

The good news is a pro-Internet hero, Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) has introduced a crucial amendment that could get rid of these dangerous loopholes and save the open Internet if passed. 

But Rep. Serrano’s amendment will only work if it has support from Congress. 

Millions of people around the world spoke out to demand our open Internet rules – and, if passed, this bill would prevent their effective enforcement, and paralyze the agency in charge with years of delays. We worked together for over a year to make sure the key decision-makers at the FCC passed the strongest, most enforceable regulations possible. We can’t lose everything we worked so hard for now.

If we don’t act now, this sneak attack could take away the protections we fought so hard to win – rules that prevent these giants from becoming gatekeepers of the Internet.
